How to Soften Your Natural Locks!!!

Full Jar Of Grain Of Rice On Pink Background Stock Photo - Image of food, eating: 175737008

So, it's summer and not only did I have to change up my skin regimen but also my hair regimen. If you've read any of my previous blog posts you know that my hair is 100% natural. I do not use any chemicals to process my hair. Currently, I have been searching for ways to soften my hair. Of course I use moisturizers but because of summer heat my hair reverts back to extreme dryness. Dryness leads to breakage and I definitely want to prevent breakage. So my regimen currently consists of daily moisturizers, a hot oil treatment every two weeks, and a protein treatment/deep condition once a month. So, my sister sent me a link to a Zoom broadcast that showed ways to take care of your natural hair. It was very informative and it made me realize that I needed to develop a routine and stick to it. The main thing that stood out for me was something to make my hair softer. The speaker said that rice water was a way to soften your hair. So now every Wednesday I give my hair a wash with rice water and my moisturizing shampoo.

Benefits of Rice Water!
Rice water detangles hair, makes hair smoother, increases shine, makes hair stronger and helps hair grow long.  Rice water reduces surface tension and increases the hairs elasticity. The starch in rice is where the benefits come from.

How to make rice water?
If you cook rice, then you can make rice water.  Soaking is the quickest  way to make rice water.  Here's what I do every Wednesday of the week:
1. I take 1/2 cup of uncooked rice
2. rinse thoroughly
3. I place it in a bowl with 2-3 cups of water.
4. Leave it to soak for 30 minutes.
5. Strain the rice water into a clean bowl.

I also warm my water in the microwave for 2 minutes so it's not so cold. That's totally optional. You do not have to warm it.  Another way to make rice water is by boiling the rice. Simply cover 1/2 cup of rice with double the water as if you are going to cook it.  Cook the rice in the boiling water and strain the rice water into a clean bowl before use. Also, if you are frugal like I am and do not like wasting, you can take the rice, add some more water and cook it.  That way it won't mildew and head for the garbage disposal.

Want more out of your rice water solution?
It's been said that fermented rice has more antioxidants.  Antioxidants may rejuvenate hair and skin cell damage, which is why they are ingredients in beauty products. So its really easy to ferment your rice water. All you have to do follow  the above steps 1-4 of the soaking method. Then before you strain it, leave the rice water to sit at room temperature for up to 2 days to ferment it. After 2 days strain the rice water into a clean bowl before use.

How to use rice water?
Can you believe it? You can replace a store bought conditioner with your rice water. Here's what you should do:
1. Wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo.
2. Rinse your hair with tap water.
3. Pour the rice water onto the hair.
4. Massage the rice water into your hair and scalp.
5. Leave it in your hair for up to 20 minutes.
6. Finally, rinse your hair with warm tap water.

My Takeaway!
I love that I have a solution that I can create myself in the comfort of my home. I love the way rice water makes my hair feel and so does my daughter because, she's always passing her fingers through my hair. I also feel more comfortable wearing my hair naturally without a wig or a wrap. I plan to continue to implement the rice water in my weekly routine. Finally, I can't wait to see it's long-term effects on my hair.

Be Sun Smart!!!

Summer, Summer Flat Lay, Flat Lay, Flatlay, Hat
Now that summer is here, there's one thing I do not leave home with out: SUNSCREEN!!! In this post I'll be discussing why sunscreen is important, what is SPF, and things I use to protect my skin from the rays of the sun.  I'm African American and because my skin tone is brown,  I didn't think I had to wear sunscreen. I was wrong because, in the summer I thought had bouts of  dry skin. It wasn't dry skin; my skin was peeling due to sunburn. So sunscreen became an essential for me.

Why Sunscreen?
Sunscreen is also known as sunblock. Sunscreen can be applied in different forms such as: lotions, gels, foams, spays, or sticks. Sunscreen reflects the sun's UV rays (ultraviolet rays) and helps protect your skin from sunburn. Ultraviolet rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation that is present in sunlight. Frequent exposure to UV rays is what causes sunburn and consequently contributes to skin cancer. Sunscreen can slow down the appearance of dark spots, sagging skin and wrinkles. So if you are going for a stroll on the beach on a hot summer day protect yourself with sunscreen.

What's SPF?
SPF stands for (Sun Protection Factor).  It's the measurement of the amount of time a sunscreen will protect you from UV rays. So some products will show SPF15 or SPF50 on the label. Here's how you calculate how long it will protect your skin: If you tend to burn after 30 minutes of exposure to the sun then you multiply 30 times 15. That is 450 minutes. Then divide 450 by 60. That gives you about 7.5 hours of protection while in the sun.  Most sunscreens wear off due to other elements or just not applying enough. So you really should reapply more sunscreen every two hours if you plan to be out in the sun for long periods of time.

Here are some inexpensive products I use year round but is also great for sun exposure:

1. Mary Kay Sun care Sunscreen SPF50

Beauty Finds $22 and Under!!

2 Reasons you should Exfoliatiate your skin

I know it's been a while, but I'm back with some more tips for beautiful glowing skin. Exfoliation is one way you can achieve several results. I haven't been really keen on exfoliation simply because, I didn't know what really worked. Also, I have sensitive skin and I didn't want adverse reactions.
Now that I am older, I really do see the benefits of exfoliation. First, I'm going to explain what exfoliation means and then I'm going to share 2 reasons why you should exfoliate regularly.

What is Exfoliation?
Exfoliation involves the removal of dead skin cells on the skins outermost surface. You can exfoliate your skin with a process called microdermabrasion.  Microdermabrasion is a gentle procedure that uses tiny crystals or exfoliating surfaces to help remove the layer of dead skin cells.  When stratum corneum (the top layer of skin) your body thinks it has an injury. Your body then quickly replaces the lost skin cells with new healthy skin cells.

2 Reasons you Should Exfoliate:
    1. Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
Exfoliation reduces the appearance of fine lines and gently refines skin's texture as it removes surface dead skin cells and build-up from pores. It helps to tighten the look of pores. With pores cleared of build-up and dead skin cells.
    2. Minimize Pores
Large pores are a sure sign of aging skin. Large pores are also more common among people with acne. So minimizing pores will help aging  skin and acne. Therefore, exfoliation can also help with scars due to acne.

2 things I use in my Daily/Weekly Routine:

    1. Skinvigorate Sonic Brush
Skinvigorate™ Cleansing Brush | Mary Kay
It is clinically shown to remove four times more dirt, oil, impurities, makeup and pollutants than hand-cleansing alone. It gets in hard to reach places and it help to soothe acne. I am even seeing a reduction in acne scars. I also use my Skinvigorate Sonic brush twice a day with my favorite MK cleanser. To learn more visit

    2. Microdermabrasion/ Pore Refine:
TimeWise® Microdermabrasion Plus Set Deluxe Mini | Mary Kay
It dramatically improves skin texture. It visibly improves the look of fine lines and immediately pores look smaller. I use this set once a week along with the Skinvigorate Sonic Brush no more than 60 seconds. My skin feels smoother and my makeup goes on more smoothly.

The Secret is in the Salt!!!!

    What is Sea Salt?
Did you know that Sea Salt has a necessary nutrient called iodide. If you love your eggs in the morning, then you get this nutrient daily because eggs are a great source of iodide.  Other sources of iodide include fish, seafood, tuna, seaweed, yogurt, milk, cheese, cereal, and bread.
Iodine is a trace element found in the Earth and it is necessary to intake for several reasons.

The Secret in the Salt!
Iodized salt is probably the easiest way to maintain sufficient iodide intake.  Iodide is an important nutrient that your thyroid needs to produce certain hormones. Iodide deficiency in your diet can lead to problems such as enlarged thyroid gland and either abnormally low levels of thyroid hormones.
Personally, I take a fourth tsp of Sea Salt with iodide every morning. It helps reduce stress and it does not cause my body to retain water.  I also use it in the food that I cook. Here in the South, many different spice blends are on the market and in our grocery stores, but sea salt compliments my overall health.  I prefer fine sea salt than coarse seas salt. Every morning, I simply place a fourth tsp of sea salt on the tip of my tongue. I let sit for about a minute and then I flush down with water. I do as soon as I get up and before I eat anything.
Iodide Deficiency Sypmtoms
Our body indicates all sorts of deficiencies with signals. Whether you are iron deficient, vitamin D deficient, or vitamin C deficient; your body will tell on you. The same is true for iodide deficiency.  Symptoms associated with a lack of iodide include the following:
  • neck swelling
  • unexpected weight gain
  • fatigue and weakness
  • hair loss
  • dry skin
  • feeling colder than usual
  • heart rythms
  • forgetfulness
  • heavy or irregular mentrual cycles

How to Unwind!!!

I love new ideas that promote self-care. Boy have I found one that is definitely relaxing and changes the atmosphere in my home. My home is my sanctuary and my dwelling place. I love things that help create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.  One day I was shopping at one of my favorite shops/boutiques, Wild Child LLC.  The owner had these pretty, wonderful-smelling candles.  That's when I realized that the candles were made by my cousin. Anyway, I bought a small one and its fragrance filled my entire den. Okay, no plugin or candle warmer or any other contraption has done that.  So, I hadn't bought any in a while and I bought some plugins and candle warmers. They weren't filling my living areas with the fragrance that the other candles had done.
So today, I went out and bought two of the large candles at the shop I had gone before. The yellow one is Cheesecake and the green one is called Pleasure Types.  These are Nancy's Natural Candles and they smell delicious!!!!  To learn more go to:  Nancy's Natural Candles

Juicing my Way to a Healthy Life!!!

So, I am on a journey to eat healthier and drink more water.  A friend of mine has been juicing and her videos and posts have encouraged me to do the same. Of course I have a juicer that was gifted to me from a family member. It's been tucked away at the bottom of my pantry. Occasionally I take it out to juice beets. Yesterday my local grocery did not have beets but it did  have beautiful green watermelons on display. Watermelons are perfect to get more water in. I'm actually craving watermelon as I'm writing about it! LoL!  Ok, let me get back in focus. I love apples and celery so I added those as well to my juice.  Juicing is great because, vegetables and fruit are nature's antioxidants.

See the source image

Antioxidants have so many benefits and come in so many different forms.  Antioxidants protect your cells from free radicals. Free radicals may cause heart disease, cancer and other diseases. On the contrary Antioxidants like vitamins C and E  help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Moreover, fruits, vegetables and whole grains are all high in antioxidants, high in fiber, low in fat and cholesterol, and excellent sources of vitamins and minerals. The best thing is that fruits and vegetables are not only low in fat but are also easy on your wallet. Investing in a juicer may be costly but it's an investment in your health which is an investment in your life.

How to Overcome Trauma

Recently my son and I had a discussion about drug use in our town. I told him how I hated it and I hate those who distribute drugs. My son asked why are you so angry? He asked where's the anger coming from?  I said because, I've seen how drugs has destroyed so many lives. I went on to tell him about all of the first hand accounts I'd seen growing up in a neighborhood surrounded by drug use. So the next day I listened to a minister and she taught a series on anger. That night I prayed to God and I confessed what was really bothering me. I was angry because, I saw prostitution at my bus stop every morning. I heard gunshots repeatedly near my bedroom window. I saw friends who had promising futures get strung out on drugs. So there I had justified my anger. The following night I realized the bigger picture; TRAUMA!!!

See the source image

I had experienced trauma; I mean layers of it. Trauma is defined as a deeply distressing experience. The anger I was dealing with was internalized. I thought how? It wasn't in my home. My mother wasn't on drugs. Now I understood, we were at the center of anger and murder in our community. Trauma is now becoming the topic of discussion in my school because, several of my students are being reared in the same environment I lived in especially in my formative years.  So I can identify with them because, I saw it in the morning and in the afternoon.  Most importantly, 3 things were stable in my life despite the unpredictability in my community: my mother, my school, and my church. Honestly, those 3 things kept us rooted and grounded.  Unfortunately, I didn't escape some effects of the ills that were constantly occurring in my community.  While I can't change the past of my childhood, I'm now able to deal with the root cause of anger. I believe when one can get to the root of a situation, then and only then can one heal. There's great work yet to be done in yesterday's, today's, and tomorrow's communities.

How to Overcome Trauma:
1. Acknowledge it.
I had to acknowledge that I had suffered the ills of a community that was hurting. Trauma was in the streets, next door, and virtually all around me. I leaped over hurdles in my community and even chose to ignore it. I chose to ignore the fact that the people in my community had a Why too. They had reasons they chose the life path they did but no voice or real outlet.
2. Open a dialogue about it.
Whether in a school setting or community group, the dialogue about trauma must start. I know that words have power. Words can heal, encourage, give hope, and rehabilitate.
3. Accept what you can or cannot change.
I can change how I feel about my past and I can change my views.  I can also be an advocate for change but I can't change everything that has occurred. I choose to move forward. I choose to heal and change the trajectory of my family.
4. Forgive! Yep! Let it go!
I have decided to forgive because, the people in my community knew not what effect they had on me. I blame my anger on them because they were under the influence of drugs. They were mentally and emotionally ill.  Most of all, I never knew their story.
5. Ask God to heal every wound.
I have decided to ask God to heal me of every wound and every part of my conscience that has been seared by the collected memories of the layers of trauma experienced in my childhood.  Amen!

How to Intensify your Eyes!!!!

I am a Mary Kay Consultant but I am also an innovator.  I love to play with makeup and makeup tools that I already have to enhance my look.  So I have bought the MK Makeup Brush Set and several eyeshadows.  The colors were going on too light.  Water!!! A little water intensifies the colors and help them go on more boldly.  I am lover of the nude look but I wanted my eyes to come out amongst the pastels on my eyelids, and cheeks. So here is what I did:

How to Fight this Allergy Season!!!

I deal with allergy and sinus all year round.  It's more intense in the fall and the spring.  I tend to experience more sinus pressure, congestion, sore throat, sneezing, etc.... more in those two seasons. It's not fun and puts a cramp in all the activities I would like to participate in.  It's usually best that I don't go outside when its very windy. I usually suffer after long walks or time in the wind because of the pollen.  I love to research and find natural ways to deal with these ailments instead of going in and out of my doctor's office.  And I certainly don't love being sedated by all the medications once I have a sinus infection.  So, I found something that helps with allergy and sinus and has been keeping me away from my doctor for the past 4 years.  Elderberry!!!! Elderberry aids in weight loss, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, reduces blood pressure, manages diabetes,  and alleviates respiratory conditions such as cold and cough. What's even better is that they also come in gummies in your local pharmacy. I take 2 a day and they taste delicious.
